Urban Edge Modernizing 10 Multifamily Properties
January 20, 2012
BOSTON —As part of an ongoing campaign to renovate its portfolio of affordable rental apartments and also improve energy efficiency in the properties, Urban Edge Housing Corp. this month is launching an overhaul of 10 buildings totaling 82 units in Jamaica Plain and Roxbury. A host of government entities, support organizations and lenders have teamed up to promote the venture, including $10 million provided by Boston Private Bank & Trust Co.
Other monies and assistance for Urban Edge’s ambitious initiative have been delivered by the Kresge Foundation and National Grid. Among the agencies assisting are MassHousing, the Massachusetts Housing Equity Fund, Massachusetts Historical Commission, the Community Economic Development Assistance Corp., Local Initiatives Support Corp. and Neighborworks America. Legal expertise in crafting the financing package and other technicalities was provided by Rackemann Sawyer & Brewster, an effort overseen by Kurt A. James, chairman of the Boston firm’s Affordable Housing and Community Development Practice Group.
UE has a pipeline of eight renovation projects that group officials say will improve housing quality and extend affordability for 515 families while reducing energy and water use to help improve the environment. It will also provide several years of jobs and support the construction industry, they note in a press release issued this week. NEI General Contracting is handling the actual work, with design guidance provided by DavisSquare Architects. Buildings being remodeled in the new venture are 1899-1901, 1989-1991 and 2014-2030 Columbus Ave.; 2-6 Jess St.; 130-132 Day St.; 7-13 Dixwell St.; 106 and 106R Minden St.; and 60 Seaver St.
In the press release, UE Director of Real Estate Noah Maslan says the platform “keeps our promise that all of the housing developed and owned by Urban Edge will remain a growing asset to its residents, their neighborhoods and the city of Boston.” Now celebrating its 38th year, Urban Edge’s mission is to promote healthy and diverse communities by providing high quality, affordable rental and ownership housing. The sustainability element has been enhanced by Green Housing at Urban Edge, or GreenHUE, a program that ensures environmental considerations are addressed in the property improvements.
