Greystar Holds Demo Ceremony for Largest Modular Residential Project In MA

Taunton — Greystar held a demolition ceremony to celebrate its latest project, the redevelopment of Whittenton Mills in Taunton, MA. The ceremony was held alongside Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell, City of Taunton officials, and the Greystar construction team at the former mill site at 437 Whittenton Street. Through innovative modular construction, the property will be transformed into a new 390-unit apartment community that is set to become the largest modular residential project in Massachusetts.

“Greystar is thrilled to begin our efforts to reimage an underused site and leverage our modular construction capabilities to bring nearly 400 units of housing to the Taunton community and fully enhance the Whittenton Mills site’s connection to the surrounding neighborhood,” said Ryan Souls, Managing Director of Development at Greystar. “As Greystar remains committed to helping increase housing supply in the Commonwealth, we are grateful for the partnership of the City of Taunton as we bring essential housing stock to the region and continue to pay homage to the site’s rich history.”

Whittenton Mills has been the site of industrial and manufacturing uses since as early as the 17th century. The demolition ceremony marked a significant step in restoring the vacant property to support the region’s growing population and create new housing opportunities in the City of Taunton. Demolition will be completed in July, and modular erection is expected to start late August 2026.

“This project represents a major investment in the future of Taunton and the continued revitalization of the Whittenton neighborhood,” said Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell. “For decades, the Whittenton Mills site has sat vacant and underutilized. Through this redevelopment, we are transforming a blighted property into new housing opportunities, public green space, and economic activity that will benefit our community for years to come. We appreciate Greystar’s partnership and commitment to working collaboratively with the City as this important project moves forward.”

The first residents at Whittenton Mills are expected to move in during spring 2027, with full project completion anticipated by fall 2027.
